Once, a group of birds in a forest decided to elect a new king for themselves and called a meeting. One of the birds said, “ Garuda is busy serving Lord Vishnu and hardly has the time to listen to our woes. Let us elect a new king from amongst ourselves.”
All the birds agreed with the suggestion. Several discussions took place amongst the birds, and finally, they decided to crown the owl as the king of birds. The birds thought that the owl was a pwoerful bird and could see during the night and hence could offer better protection against other animals.
Suddenly, a crow flew in and asked the birds the purpose of the meeting. The birds knew that the crow was an intelligent bird, and decided to seek his opinion. They told him about their plans to coronate the owl as the king of birds.
The crow said, “why have we chosen an owl as our king? An owl is blind during the day. It is ugly, and preys on other birds! Perhaps, a peacock or swan would be a better choice.”
The birds agreed with the crow’s argument and decided to postpone the election. An Attendant coveyed the decision to the owl.
The owl became furious when he found out that the crow had argued against his appointment as the king of birds. The owl approached the crow and said, “You spoke against me and deprived me of the honor of being the king. From today onwards, owls and crows will be enemies.”
The crow was at a loss for words, And it was too late to apologise.
