Dharmabuddhi and Papabuddhi

Once, there lived two friends named Dharmabuddhi an papabuddhi. Papabudhi was wicked and lacked the skills to earn for himself. He was also envious of Dharmabuddhi, who was an honest businessman.

After some days, Papbuddhi visited Dharmabuddhi and said, “My friend, let us go to the city and earn a fortune.”

Dharmabuddhi agreed with him, and the next morning they left to travel to a distant city. In a few days , they found work due to Dharmabuddhi’s skills. In the following months, both had earned and saved well.

Satisfied with their earning, they decided to return to their village. While travelling back to the village, Papabuddhi said, “we must not take all our savings back to the village. What if we get robbed?”

Dharmanbuddhi took papabuddhi’s advice and buried half of their savings inside the hollow of a huge tree in the forest, and returned home. After a couple of days, Papabuddhi went to the tree alone, took out all the money, and hid it elsewhere. Then he visited Dharmabuddhi and said, “we must bring back the other half we buried. I have many expenses.”

Dharmabuddhi agreed, so they went back to the tree but found the hollow empty. Papabuddhi accused Dharmabuddhi of stealing the money from the hollow of the tree. Dharmabuddhi protested, “ I did not steal the money. I am innocent. I will ask the village elders to sort this matter out.”

When the elders were made aware of the theft, they suggested that they should visit the spot and investigate. Papabuddhi went to his father and narrated the entire story to him. He then said to his father, “please hide in the hollow of the tree and testify in my favour by speaking as the tree’s Guardian spirit."

Papbuddhi’s father was reluctant but finally agreed to the wicked plan. At night, he went to the tree and hid in its hollow. The next morning, all the villagers accompanied Dharmabuddhi and Papabuddhi to the tree in the forest. Everyone was surprised when a voice came from inside the tree, “Listen, everyone! Dharmabuddhi has stolen the money!”

Dharmabuddhi knew that the voice was lying as he did not steal the money. He was sure that Papabuddhi was trying to trick the villagers after stealing the money. He quickly placed some dry wood around the tree and set it on fire. Papabuddhi’s father was scared and came out of the hollow screaming.

The villagers understood Papabuddhi’s plan and asked him to return Dharmabuddhi’s money. Later, they banished Papabudhi and his father from the village.
